Ronchi Varesini wine has more than 5 centuries of history.
Between 1600 and 1700 all lands around Borromeo Castle were famous for their excellent wine. Wine produced here was all destined to Lords living in Milan.
Press machines in Rocca di Angera and on Santa Caterina del Sasso Hermitage are the evident proves of a great winemaking tradition.
Name of Ronchi Varesini wine comes from the names of the terraces (ronchi) where vines were cultivated on Lake Maggiore since the times of archbishop St. Carlo Borromeo. This up to 1870 when vines were converted in silkworm cultivations or simply abandoned.
Luckily, in these last few years historical vines around Borromeo Castle have been restored and they came back to life producing wonderful red, white and rose wines. It is a small quantity destined only to the guests of the Castle and few restaurants in the area that want to serve very local products on their tables. But tasting a wine with such a long history could be a dive in the past!
